Structural Response of Multistory RC Buildings to Excavation of a Disposal Well

Soakaway disposal wells are used heavily in Sudan for on-site sanitation systems. These have a diameter of 1.5–2.0 m, depth ranging from 10 to 35 and postinstalled brick walls. They often located close building foundation seldom excavated between footings. Although engineers aware induced ground movements, the influence such movements on existing structures currently is ignored both during new excavations as well structural design buildings. This paper studied response RC frame settlements horizontal by excavation using soil–structure interaction model. The model, adopting beam theory elements half-space model ground, uses stiffness approach solve excavation–soil–structure interaction. For typical frames Sudan, caused excavation, additional forces upper frame, resulting deformations infill walls were addressed. As practical suggestion, it recommended use strap beams connecting pads stiffen horizontally and, thus reduce unfavorable effects (possible) excavations.
